Hey—
You doing anything
For National Poetry Month?
Is it just me
Or does that sound
Like a bad pickup line
In a dark bar near campus,
The boozy question
Clanking around the recycle bin
Like another empty bottle?
If my glorious poem above wasn't quite enough poetry for you (I can't imagine why!), try these sites:
- 30 Ways to Celebrate National Poetry Month
I love this list from poets.org. One of my favorites is number four: memorize a poem. I've found that random lines of poetry sometimes pop up in my head such as "a tedious delusion, a hobby like knitting." That's from "The Young Who Want To" by Marge Piercy, by the way. - A Haiku for Getting Out of Bed
If you like to sleep in, this funny T-shirt is for you! - NoPoWriMo
A version of the popular "NaNoWriMo" for novelists asks you to write a poem a day for 30 days. (Yes, you've missed the first few days, but you can get caught up!) - Poetry for Kids: 10 Favorite Poetry Books
Creekside Learning, a site for homeschooling parents, pulled together this list which includes one of my favorite books, Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. I didn't know that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote poetry, so that was a nice surprise. - Poetry TED Talks
Hear what poets themselves have to say on the topic. - Pop Sonnets
Billed as "Shakespearean Spins on Your Favorite Songs," this Tumblr site takes on the likes of Beyonce and The Beatles and turns their lyrics into Shakespearean poetry. This website is now available in book form. - Sleeping with Poets
Still not convinced you should celebrate? Maybe you should just curl up for the rest of the month under this handmade duvet cover with an image of poetry books. It will be May before you know it.
