I picked up my first fruit share from my local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program this week. I was surprised to receive a bottle of cherry-apple cider and cherry wine. I expected whole fruit, not fruit-made-into-something. I'm not upset, just surprised. Evidently, the spring hail damaged some orchids. These bottles are "Plan B."
The experience made me think about other recent expectations:
- Every morning I expect to only spend 5 minutes checking Facebook or email. I'm always surprised it takes longer. I should be surprised that I'm surprised!
- I wrote a piece this week where I had to reference something that was about 3 x 5 inches. I originally wrote "the size of a file card." Then I realized that I couldn't expect my readers to know what that was! (There's been a lot written about the death of the book—what about the death of the file card?)
- I ordered some beads online and when they arrived, they were HUGE. Much bigger than I'd expected. Yes, I'm sure I read the measurements when I ordered, but obviously that didn't register in my brain. I have no idea what I'm going to do with these beads!
Oh, and when I was picking up those bottles from my CSA, I saw another person picking up his share. He drove a Prius, which is something I expected to see. I did not expect him to drive eight houses down and park in the driveway!
What did you expect recently? Did you get what you expected?
