I've been reading a lot of amazing blog posts lately. The kind of post you don't just read and forget, but the kind that make you think, whether you agree with them or not. Here are three that made an impression on me:
Andrew Thornton: Allegory Gallery
Andrew is raising money so that he can open his own shop for artists. This blog post struck a chord with me because it made me wonder: if I'd been in the same situation where I needed money to pursue a big dream, what would I have done? It honestly would never have occurred to me to hold a fundraiser. I'd probably just sigh and let the dream disappear. Lesson learned: ask for help. You just might be pleasantly surprised!
Erin Prais-Hintz: Etsy Addiction
I loved the posts Erin wrote for her birthday week, but the one on Etsy struck a chord with me because she mentioned doing several of the exact same things that I'd done: opening a shop and then not putting anything in there to sell; over-researching and analyzing things; obsessively checking to see there's been any views or "hearts"; being totally surprised by her first sale. This is the most practical list of Etsy advice I've read in a long time. (The comments on this post have great advice, too.)
Kerrie Flanagan: No More Rejections
Kerrie runs the local Northern Colorado Writers association where I live and does an admirable job. I really like the post she wrote on rejection. It's a must-read if you're sending your work out, whether it's a piece of writing or a piece of jewelry. She compares the process to dining out at a restaurant. Declining work is probably the task I like the least in the editing world. I was happy to read a post by someone who really gets it. (It really isn't personal, although I know it feels that way!)
