I'm starting to build up inventory for upcoming holiday shows. I have a system for my jewelry inventory, but this is the first time I'll be offering a large number of paper cards. Cards are so much bigger and heavier than jewelry. It's taken me a little time to figure out how to organize them.
First Try . . .
I started putting my note cards into boxes, but I quickly realized that I had too many designs for that system to work. Just sorting by "birthday cards" meant that I still didn't know how many of the polka dot birthday card I had, as opposed to the ever-popular cupcake card.
Second . . .
I had a conventional canvas, over-the-door shoe holder with the pockets in front already, so I took a quick look to see if it would work. The pockets were too narrow; I was afraid the cards might get bent placing them inside. Plus, I'd have to label the outside of them, since I wouldn't be able to see what was in each pocket.
Third . . .
I was delighted to find the shoe holder pictured here. It has pockets on the side, rather than in front.
I love being able to recycle, so my "labels" are half-slips of paper (leftover scraps from printing shipping labels) that I've written on and folded over.
The shoe holder cost $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond, plus I had a $5 off coupon. I feel really organized with this new system. The downside is that I can see how much work I still need to do!
Other Uses
Even if you don't make cards, I'm hoping that my solution might spark some other storage ideas for you. How about yarn or small rolls of fabric inside each cubbyhole? Any other suggestions for other readers?
