"I think sometimes trend spotting is all relative:
I find something that I
really, really love, and say, "Yup, that's a trend!"
But whether or not
it actually sticks is up to time and
whether or not it's well-received
by the end consumer."
-- Brittany Siminitz, JCK Marketplace Manager
I'm usually late to the party when it comes to using jewelry trends in my own designs, so it's surprising that I managed to squeeze not one but several several current trends into my recent Stalactite Sky Necklace:
- Spike beads: These long orange and blues beads are not as pointed or triangular shaped as some of the new spiked beads on the market, but they definitely still give off that "danger" vibe.
- Rough, raw-looking crystal gemstones: The beads in this necklace are a much more affordable version of the real thing.
- Statement necklace: Big, bold necklaces are still going strong.
- Gold-toned metals: Gold is supposed to be big again this year. (To make this necklace even trendier, I might have substituted a thick, gold chain instead of the gold beads at the back.)
My Stalactite Sky Necklace project instructions are available on the Michaels website.
Are any of these trends showing up in your own jewelry?
Quotation source: "5 Jewelry Trends from JCK Las Vegas 2013" in JCK Magazine. This is a magazine for the fine jewelry industry. It can be helpful to see what's happening there and speculate how it might trickle down to everyday, more affordable jewelry. (I pulled the trends listed here from a number of fashion magazines and other sources, not this specific JCK article.)
