I've been busy making lots of key chains for Father's Day. If you're making or shopping for key chains, here are a few tips:
- Metal trends: Copper still has the edge over silver for metal choice for a man's accessory. That said, I've sold more silver-plated key chains for Father's Day this year than last (so far). Part of a trend?
- Metal disc: Choose a sturdy metal disc that can stand up to a lot of
wear. Key chains are used every day and often get thrown into bags and
dropped on the floor. Thinner, softer metal is often cheaper, so if you're shopping by price be sure you know what you're getting!
- Brightness and color: Most metals will often tarnish, darken, or patina over time. This effect can add a rugged or rustic look to your key chain. If you prefer metal that stays bright, either look for a long-lasting metal finish (aluminum tends to stay shiny) or ask if you can polish the key chain to bring back the bright color. (For example, it's common to polish a sterling silver key chain just as you would jewelry.)
- Key rings: I like using stainless steel key rings. They're more expensive than the more common nickel-plated ones, but they can get wet and not rust. Plus, some people are sensitive to metals and nickel is a common allergen. That may or may not be important to you.
- Personalization: Everyone has different names for their father figure: Dad, Daddy, Papaw, Papa, Pops, Father ... Use the name your family prefers. If you can, add a name or date to the back for an extra personal touch. "Est. [year]" (the year the recipient became a dad) is a popular phrase.
- Shop early: If you're making the key chain yourself, you can be "Last Minute Lucy." If you're ordering online, you need to order in advance to allow time for customization and shipping. I'll take Father's Day orders from U.S. customers until June 7th, just to make sure that they have time to arrive, but some shops may already be booked up. (Father's Day is June 15th.)
- Less is more: Occasionally customers will request a long paragraph of text for the key chain and we'll work together on shortening it. Write all those lovely extra sentences on the card!
