When I saw all the photos of knitted mittens and sweaters for the December Pretty Palettes, I knew I wanted to make a piece of jewelry with the same woven feeling. Here's how I did it:
Beads
The Bead Gallery beads (available at Michaels) I used were:
- white 5mm faceted glass rounds (MSKU #10217016)
- silver-plated dotted rondelles (MSKU #103208212)
- red glass 4mm rounds (MSKU #10321778)
- black faceted glass 5 rounds (MSKU #10322115)
- black faceted glass 3x4mm rondelles (MSKU #10149831)
I especially like those dark red glass rounds. They have the look of shiny ceramic beads.
Tools and Materials
I used black WildFire bead weaving thread. I didn't use a needle because I found the thread stiff and almost needle-like by itself. However, if you have problems with the thread fraying or fitting through the beads, you'll find it easier to work with a needle.
Technique
I used circular peyote stitch to create the three dangles for the necklace focal. I love using beads other than seed beads for bead stitching because I find the results so unpredictable! If you want to try this, here are a few tips:
- The holes in these beads are much larger than seed beads, so you should pass your beading thread through several times to help fill up the bead holes and create a stiff shape.
- If you want the shapes to have a more uniform, symmetrical look, use only beads that are the same size and shape. I decided I liked the "handmade" look of using three different bead shapes and sizes.
- I kept the three beaded circles separate, so they do move and overlap slightly when worn. If you prefer that they remain firmly in place, stitch them together into one large focal.
About the Necklace Name
This necklace definitely has a holiday vibe. I thought the beaded circles looked slightly star-shaped, which made me think about wishing on a star. Here's to 2016 and your three wishes for the new year!
