5 Librarians Everyone Should Know
Yes, I used to be a librarian at a university, but that's not the only reason I think librarians are cool. When I heard that NPR thinks that libraries might be the next big pop-culture wave (after cupcakes), I thought I'd share 5 librarians in popular culture who everyone should know:
- Dewey the cat. Okay, so he's not technically a librarian, but as real librarians know, the public thinks everyone who works in a library is a librarian! This is a cat whose life was chronicled in the best seller titled Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World and who is having a movie made about him starring Meryl Streep (presumably not in the title role). When Dewey died, his obituary appeared in 250 newspapers, including The New York Times.
- Nancy Pearl, author of Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, and Reason. She was also the model for the librarian action figure with the incredible shushing action.
- Flynn Carsen (played by Noah Wyle) in The Librarian movie. I confess, I haven't seen this movie, but the idea of the former E.R. doc playing a librarian just makes me laugh!
- Rupert Giles (played by Anthony Stewart Head) in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Here's how the character Xander describes him: "He's like Super Librarian. Everyone forgets, Willow, that
knowledge is the ultimate weapon."
- The Mallville Public Library Librarians in the Unshelved comic strip. Even if you don't work in a library, you'll find this comic strip funny if you've ever worked with the public or odd co-workers. Below is a sample comic strip. (It rotates every day.)
Who would you add to this list of "must know" librarians?
