I've been submitting projects to card magazines. I'd study the guidelines and try to come up with the "right" card to send in, but I kept getting "No thanks" or no response at all.
Over the weekend, I decided to make a card inspired by someone who likes a lot of sparkle and the occasional Friday margarita after a hard work week. The card combines layers of paper, flat-backed crystals, a sequin (the silver star at the top), and a trio of beaded dangles at the bottom.
It still might not work for a magazine, but this design process was so much simpler (and more fun) than trying to design a card for a mythical "someone." This is definitely a trick I'm going to try for future submissions, whether to card magazines or other publications like beading magazines. The best part of this strategy is that if the design isn't accepted for publication, I know I can still send that card out to someone who will appreciate it!
