Last week Beading Daily published one of my necklace projects, Sorbet in August, in a free eBook, 5 Free Beading Projects to Learn How to Bead. (You'll need to sign up for Beading Daily to download it, but it's free.)

Suitable for The Office? Sometimes you design or write something with one idea in mind, but the person on the other end will have a completely different idea. Case in point: the description on the Beading Daily website (which I didn't write) describes my Sorbet in August necklace as a "wear to the office" look. When someone says "office" to me, I visualize suits and neutral colors (navy, beige, black), so I have a hard time picturing anyone wearing this necklace to work, unless it was Casual Friday. Or maybe they were referencing the TV show, The Office? (Trying to picture Steve Carell wearing this necklace . . . uh-oh . . . Unsuccessfully trying to erase that image . . . ) |
There's nothing wrong with describing this necklace as "office wear," but when I designed it, I envisioned a casual
piece that could be worn with bright summer dresses or jeans. It's not just the bright colors of the lampworked beads from zbeadz.com that make this a
casual piece for me, it's also their unusual shape. It's not just the lampworked beads that say "casual." While it's hard to tell from this photo, most of the black
rounds in the necklace are lava rock beads, which are pitted, rough,
and not perfectly round. An "office"
design for me would not only include classic elements like gemstones and
pearls, but symmetrical, smooth shapes.
